Soup is a type of food that I can’t live without during the cold season. Spicy soup is even a better combination.
This soup is inspired by a dish I ordered one time at a Japanese restaurant. It was SO flavorful that I couldn’t forget. And that I attempted to re-create it, but with a twist of Korean flavor.
Oxtail Spicy Tofu Soup makes a perfect healthy meal that brings the warmth into your house as well as your appetite. You will want second, third, and even fourth. With some rice, the meal is completed.
Oxtail Spicy Tofu Soup
Serving: 4
Ingredients:
2.5 lbs oxtail
1 carrot, peeled and cut into 1-inch long
1 onion, peeled and halved
1/2 onion, julienne
8 shiitake mushrooms
8 cups water
1 box firm tofu, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2 tbsp Korean hot pepper paste
1 tsp pepper flakes
chopped green onion and cilantro (optional)
Preparation
In a large pot, bring oxtail and water to a boil on high heat. This helps to rinse any excess blood from oxtails and to keep soup base clean and clear.
Meanwhile, remove stems from 4 of the shiitake mushrooms. Set aside with the other half of the mushrooms. With the mushroom caps, julienne them and set aside with julienne onion.
Drain the boiled oxtail. Put oxtail back into pot. Add carrot, the halved onion, whole mushrooms and stems. Fill the pot with 8 cups of water. Cover and bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for at least 2 hours.
Discard onion, carrot, mushrooms and stems.
Add pepper, paste, mushrooms, onion and tofu. Simmer for another 30 minutes.
Serve with green onion and cilantro and rice as desire.Â

The oxtail provides flavor to the broth, like chicken. And tofu picks up any flavor that it is mixed with. This one is a good combo. Give it a try and you will see ð
We have similar in the Philippines but instead of tofu, we used ox tripe with peanut sauce. I wouldn’t mind trying this, it looks delicious. Where can you buy Korean hot paste?
I found mine at a Korean supermarket but any Chinese/Oriental supermarket should has it too ð

You just made me salivate – this spicy oxtail soup looks so Asian and Singaporean, plus with the rainy windy weather in Buenos Aires today, I’d give up so many things for an entire bowl of this appetite-stirring heavenly soup!!
Thankfully I’ll be back in Asia in less than 2 months – am definitely going to fill myself up with Asian delights then!!

I had a lot of fun baking over the weekend with some girlfriends. Soup is one of my favorite food so I would find different ingredients to mix and match. Going back to Asia will be so much fun. I am excited for you!
This looks delicious. If I close my eyes, I can just taste it now…. Something I would consider adding would be daikon radish to add some sweetness to the soup base and it’s bloody awesome in a spicy soup. I love that you’ve added tofu, as that is really good in a spicy dish. Yum yum yum yum yum!
Thank you! I normally would put daikon to stew in my soup base too. It’s like an Asian thing, right? But I opted with onion for a different taste. The tofu was inspired by Korean tofu soup. I love that soup a lot!

Thanks, Juliana! You probably would be able to find it in any Asian supermarket in Macau as I found mine in a Chinese supermarket here. If not, you can substitute it with the spicy hot pot soup base. They are as tasty!

Oxtail as soup base is delicious. I love chewing on the bone. Oxtail soup is great for Pho (Vietnamese beef noodle soup) too, if you ever want to try it.

i have not cook oxtail before and would love to try it soon. but all in my mind is oxtail cooked in western style. I’ve never thought of making it like a oriental dish. Thank you for waking up my sleepy right brain Irene.
Authentic soup base of Pho uses oxtail too. You will love it. It has a strong flavor. I love how the meat just fall off the bone when you eat.
What an interesting way to cook up oxtail! This kind of reminds me of Kimchi Jjigae. Will have to give this a try. Thanks for posting.

I didn’t have all the ingredients at home, so I did some substitutions, which I shouldn’t have done (Goan fish curry paste instead of red pepper paste) :):)
